Images associated with Japan

Seiganto-ji(青岸渡寺) - Sanjūdō Pagoda

Signifier: Buddhism, Pagoda, Cherry blossom, Waterfall, Nature

When I first saw this picture I am amazed by its mixed of color and when you look at this you will directly link it to Japanese culture. Red Pagoda, White waterfall, Pink Cherry blossom and Green nature around all that. When I view this picture, I am thinking about the "Beautiful Japan" video on the course blog, and editing the traditional music among the side. Also, the pagoda is a sign for Buddhism. Japan has a long history of how Buddhism arrived and developed, pretty much Buddhism is associated with lots of traditional Japanese cultural.

Nintendo 3DS w/ Yo-kai Watch(妖怪ウォッチ) in the background

Signifier: Game Cultural, Nintendo 3DS machine, Yo-kai Watch(Anime)

Nintendo is a Japanese company, OTAKU cultural also a huge part of Japanese cultural, so when I look at the Nintendo 3DS, I will be thinking about  Akihabara in Japan, the OTAKU's paradise and Yo-Kai are another anime product of Japan, it is kind like Pokemon, but the new version for nowaday's generation children.

Bentō(弁当) - My Neighbor Totoro
Signifier: Bento Cultural, Hayao Miyazaki, Cute

Bento is another Key element of Japanese Cultural, and the reason I chose this cute Bento pictural is I can feel how much love or how passion is a mother making this Bento for her kids. And I always think there's the way many cuteness that you can find in Japan, or let me phrase this again, I think Japan is a country that full of Moe, which some cuteness that represents shows how they love their life. And the picture show above, My Neighbor Totoro is a production of Hayao Miyazaki(I believed everyone knows about him)

  1. I really like the pictures you chose especially the third one. I have also seen lots of pictures of Bento online. I think it is amazing how much passion the moms have towards the family and life. Also, I think Japanese people pay close attention on the balance of nutrition of food. So in the picture, I can see lots of different kinds of vegetables.
I guess the question I have is are most Japanese Buddhists? Based on some of pictures and movies I saw I feel like Japanese people have some kind of their own religion and belief. I am not quite sure though.

  2. The lists of signifiers were really helpful in my understanding of the images! And I really love the last image you have posted, and the mention of the passion the mother has making the Bento box for her kids. That bento box that is shown is so intricate, and it looks like it took such a long time to make, with all sorts of little pieces. That really gets the point across that this mother is willing to go to great extremes to put a smile on her kids' faces, which says a lot about how hard-working the mothers of the nation are.
