"In Praise of Shadows" Assignment (due March 15)

1.  Read “In Praise of Shadows” if you haven’t already.  Then, on your personal blog, do the following:

a.  Present what you think is the main point of the essay.

b.  Discuss two items/discussions from the essay that you found interesting, and post images that illustrate points made by Tanizaki.  Even if you don’t necessarily agree with his points, try to find images that illustrate the points from his perspective.  Please do not deal with certain content that might be considered today to be overtly racist or sexist (although you can deal with such things as kimono or teeth-blackening if you wish).  

c.  Present one or two questions or topics for discussion in class.  You can include points he makes where you don’t understand what he’s trying to say.

This assignment is due to be posted on your personal blog by 10 am Wednesday on your personal blog.

Berman Museum Ukiyo-e Analysis

Kuwagata KEISAI Bird on a Blossoming Branch Berman Museum This piece of Ukiyo-e by Kuwagato KEISAI has a different angle then other Ukiyo-e, for me i think when I saw this one, it's from author's point of view looking up the bird(or author might want people who saw this feel that way). I assume people who view this also feels like they are under the tree, or under the branch. The view of the bird on the branch actually made this Ukiyo-e more  three-dimensional, less flat, but when I saw those cherry blossom flower I feel flat again(science they don't have color). The blueness in this Ukiyo-e was also well match together, like the background the Color Grading from deep blue(ocean blue) to light blue(sky blue)*view this one up and down. Also, the branches and leaves are the same color like the top deep blue color. When I doing the research for this Ukiyo-e, I also find two other similar piece of this one.
